Inveraray

There's a reason I've been back to Inveraray time and time again. Not only does it have a stunning scenic hour and a half drive from Glasgow, it holds one of my favourite views (from atop the watch tower hill overlooking Inveraray and Loch Fyne).  Oh, and it also happens to have the place that sells the best Mac n Cheese.  S-coooooore!

The first stop on the drive to Inveraray should always be the 'Rest and be Thankful', a famous viewpoint overlooking the old valley road. It is simply sublime and worth a short 10 minute stop to see it in all its glory. Sit on the grass (or one of the benches) and just relax for a few minutes. Think about what you're thankful for in your life. It's the best wellness experience around.

If you're feeling a little peckish or parched during the roadtrip, stop off at Loch Fyne Restaurant & Oyster Bar. Before entering the actual restaurant, you'll find a little deli that stocks fresh produce (cheese, breads, fish etc) and you can even grab a hot drink and sit down.

Arriving in Inveraray you will be spoiled for things to do. I always start with the hike up the Dun Cuaiche - a beautiful trek through woodlands and up the hill to the watch tower that overlooks Inveraray and Loch Fyne. The starting point for the walk is just by Inveraray Castle which gives you ample opportunity to check out how beautiful it is.

The walk itself begins to the left of the castle. Follow along the little bridge then take a swift right up through the woodlands where you'll see a sign. Continue up it and you'll be treated to some absolutely brilliant views! All in, it should take you around 1hr 30mins/2 hours. Or if like me, you haven't been out hiking in a while, just pace yourself, and bring plenty water, and keep thinking of the Mac n Cheese at The George Hotel you will be sheer devouring (more on that later).

For historical fans, the Inveraray Jail is a must-see. It''s a truly great place to head and spend an hour wandering around exploring and learning about the history of the jail. Just watch out for the people standing in the courtyards - they are real.

All that hiking and exploring sure as hell works up one hell of an appetite and there's no other thing for it than to head to the George Hotel. This place, in my opinion, has the BEST Mac n Cheese around.  Order it along with some chips on the side and you will not regret it, I promise! I've also heard they do a fantastic fish n chips too.

Before you head home, take some time walking around the little shops and waterfront, it's a perfect way to end what is one of my favourite day trips in Scotland.

Until next time,
